The annual Fostering Strength luncheon brings together hundreds of Cedar Rapids-area community partners, foster care and adoption professionals, JLCR donors, and more for an afternoon of impactful stories of hope and perseverance through difficult times. We feature a nationally known speaker each year, often with their own foster care or adoption story.

This event is JLCR’s largest annual fundraiser. Proceeds support on-going programs for young people aging out of foster care in Linn and nearby counties. Learn more about our work through our Bridging the G.A.P. project.

Junior League will follow applicable CDC recommendations for COVID-19 on the day of the event.

Featuring Janiva Magness…

Janiva Magness’ music success stands as just one facet of her miraculous, nearly unbelievable, life-story. In Weeds Like Us, readers discover the many difficult battles Magness fought before her music career blossomed. She talks about how she lost both parents to suicide as a child and was placed in a dozen foster homes. How her childhood traversed violence, bullying, incest, addiction and alcoholism, rape, clinical depression, and the death of her parents. “By the time I was a 14-year-old runaway,” Magness admits, “I felt in many ways not only a prisoner of my past, but hypnotized by it.”
